Reading and Leeds announce headliners amidst sexism controversy

Reading and Leeds Festival have announced their headliners and other performers for next years’ festival to some controversy. They have been widely criticised for the lack of female performers across the headline slots with Mabel being the only female performer of note announced for the festival so far.

Taking place over the weekend commencing the 27th of August 2021, Oasis legend Liam Gallagher, Stormzy, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Post Malone, Disclosure, Queens Of The Stone Age, Lewis Capaldi and Two Door Cinema Club are some of the major acts announced so far.

It can be argued that there simply aren’t the female artists for the bigger slots; the festival has a demographic to cater to and as a business they use names that will sell tickets. There are simply more male artists and bands in the pool of talent to book from which is more revealing of the music industry itself rather than the festival. Booking a female band to headline simply for equality sake doesn’t do anybody any favours.

Hopefully the undercard can include some of the amazing female performers out there such as Bully, Jade Bird, Phoebe Bridgers and Pale Waves.
