Introducing The Wha - Ireland's hottest alternative prospects

Published on 19 September 2020 at 00:58

We have been fans of Ireland’s The Wha for a while now ever since hearing previous single release Innocents in what seems like an age ago. The Wha are somewhat in the shadows still despite a string of cracking releases in Blue For You and 40 Odd Years; a genuine band that indie music aficionados, especially those of you who enjoy seeking out new bands, will grow to love.

Their latest release is Young Skins, a blinder of a tune that has urgent lyrics gloriously impacting over swooning instrumentation and driving guitars, culminating in an instant singalong hit. Produced by Stephen Street (who must be the busiest man in music), Young Skins is the sound of a hungry band ready to take on the world.

All of the band are aged between 19-20 years old and it wasn’t that long ago they were scrappy youths playing in a garage. The Wha are dual vocalists and guitarists Finn Cusack and Sam Cullen, joined by Marek Lech on bass and Abe G. Harris banging the drums. With influences ranging from The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan all the way to Father John Misty, The Wha find humour and understanding everywhere - piling it high alongside buoyant riffs. Ireland has a slew of great indie talent right now and we can safely add The What to that list. The band are undoubtedly Ireland's hottest alternative prospect.
