DAISY GILL Tells Us About Her Tongue-In-Cheek New Single 'Telephone'

OSM: Hi, where is Daisy Gill from and what instruments do you play?
I’m from Liverpool, and I play guitar, piano and flute.

OSM: Your new single, ‘Telephone’’, is out now. What was the songwriting process for the track?
The writing process was actually really easy for this song as I was bored in lockdown and reflecting on my past relationships and how when I was younger I used to be so mailable and would take poor treatment from the people I dated. I thought it was funny to make a track that I knew would speak to others because I’d been through it! I wanted it to be really fun and tongue in cheek and not take itself too seriously because as you get older you learn to set your boundaries and not let those things happen anymore. Sonically I took inspiration from hip-hop and r&b females such as Christina Aguleira, Missy Elliot , TLC and wanted a real 90’s/00s vibe with the production.

OSM: As the writer, what is the song about, what is the song’s message?
I think the track is loud and clear in its message, but I think to me it was a message to my younger self to finally let go of how I used to let the wrong people into my life and it’s so liberating to bring out music because it allows you release a part of yourself and let things go.

OSM: What challenges have you faced since launching your career?
I think it’s hard for most up and coming artists at the moment, the market is very saturated but with consistency and the right audience you can captivate the right people and that’s all it’s about as independent artists.

OSM: What are the plans for the year ahead for yourself?
More music is definitely coming as well as more shows and music videos!

OSM: If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?
How a lot of the major record labels still operate like it’s The 90s with the same mindset but fail to realise things have massively changed especially with the rise of platforms like TikTok and artists don’t need them as much as before to succeed.

OSM: If you could share the stage with another band or performer who would it be?
Lady Gaga I think she’s incredible.

OSM: Who are some of the main influences of your music?
I love Alicia Keys, she inspires me so much as a female producer, she really paved the way for women in music.

OSM: What songs are on your playlist right now, which songs are you into at the moment?

Miley Cyrus -  'Plastic Hearts', Taylor Swift - 'Invisible String' and Kate Bush - 'Cloud Busting'.
