OSM: Hi guys, how long have you been performing as sleepyhead and how did the band come about?
Hi! We’ve been releasing music under the name ‘sleepyhead’ since 2018, however we were writing music for a good few years before then. We’ve been friends since high school and our musical interests seemed to diverge more and more until we eventually started writing music as we both began uni. Once we graduated we began releasing everything we’d written!

OSM: Has any particular artist or genre influenced your music the most?
We’re strongly influenced by the indie DIY scene that emerged a few years ago, with artists like Frankie Cosmos, Pinegrove, Alex G, Snail Mail. We also love The Beatles, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Strokes etc..

OSM: Your new single, ‘In Nature’’ is out now. What was the songwriting and recording process of the track?
The song actually existed for well over a year before we finally finished it. I wrote the first 30 seconds as a demo initially but chickened out of writing the rest of the song at the time. It was then left as that short demo for super long before we realised it was definitely worth revisiting and wrote the rest.

OSM: What is the theme of the song, what is its message?
With it being the title track, it encapsulates a lot of the ongoing themes of the EP of craving escapism & having ‘itchy feet’ longing for a change.

OSM: The song is the title track of an upcoming EP. What can we expect from the EP?
The EP serves as the second half of a full album, after we released the first half of songs last year. ‘In Nature’ is very much a continuation from where we left off on the first half. Although despite it being the 2nd half of the album I’d say we’re even more proud of the songs on it than the 1st.

OSM: What challenges have you faced since launching your career?
We self-produce & release our songs independently so it can be tricky finding the time to do everything we need to do, especially when coordinating two people.

OSM: What are the plans for the year ahead for yourself?
Over the next couple of months we’ll be releasing the rest of the EP & we’ll also be playing some live gigs in and around Manchester! We’ve also already been working on a lot of new material so we’re hoping to begin releasing our next project by the end of the year.

OSM: If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?
It does feel that (myself included) people’s attention spans for music are getting shorter and shorter due to things like TikTok & the easy access to basically every song ever made. Whilst those two things also have a lot of advantages, I just hope people are still up for listening to full albums all the way through!

OSM: If you could share the stage with another band or performer who would it be?
I’d say Frankie Cosmos as they were the band who initially sparked our interest in writing indie-pop songs as a duo.

OSM: What songs are on your playlist right now, which songs are you into at the moment?
Alvvays & Alex G have both recently released great new singles. Also still enjoying a lot of the songs from Kendrick Lamar’s latest album.
