Single Reviews 16/10/20

Hot Money by Children Of The State is the first release from the band's upcoming Tragic Carpet EP. Now based in Manchester, Hot Money was produced by The Coral’s Ian Skelly and is immediately gratifying. With shades of INXS, there is a huge sound here pulled along by a riff and bassline that is digging into my brain as I type. A must listen. Hot Money is our Single of The Week and easily so, with fuzzy guitars and a pumping beat. The band have landed slots at Tramlines and Our Sound backed YANA Fest as well as previously selling out The Leadmill. With releases like this, the future is very bright indeed for Children Of The State. Stream here.

We have a slew of releases to cast our eye over this week and first up is Eighty Ninety with Better As Friends, a slice of contemporary pop in the vein of The 1975 at their most pop. The Brooklyn based brothers have produced a slick tune here...Circus Wolves have released an EP titled This Is Something You Can’t Replace. It is Manc alt rock done right; loud with lots of guitars complete with more indie than rock vocals which suit the bands sound to a tee albeit bordering on theatrical especially on track The Taste. What is apparent throughout the EP is that Circus Wolves have a defined rock sound that is really really great...Our Sound favourites Tropical Boyfriend Catalogue have been busy this year and their latest release I Can Run Faster Than Your Car is a steer in the direction of more straightforward indie pop. Some lovely jangly guitars here and an earworm chorus to boot...Fuse is the latest release from Hello Cosmos, a band that certainly knows how to blow away the cobwebs. With an album on the horizon, this is a promising release indeed with some clever lyrics...Sentient Robot gives us some laid back dreamy synth pop on From The Outset (Your Own Way). It is classic songwriting here and if it was released in the mid 80’s would be considered an all time hit. Such as it is, this contemporary take on 80’s songwriting will probably never get the listens it overwhelmingly deserves. A triumph of a tune...Dizzy are releasing an EP next month, a collection of covers and the first release from it is a cover of Talking Heads This Must Be The Place. Dizzy have done a great job here with a soothing vocal...Peak Low have a new album out called Transition and R U OK? Is the colourful single release that accompanies. With hints of The Beatles melodies in places and traditional hard rock, this is big and bold...Thrillhouse love a review and new single If It’s Important is a lengthy yet involving track that has a repetitive loop that becomes repetitive fairly quickly despite a song here that is certainly listenable thanks to the engrossing lyrics...Last but by no means least and Break Us from Future Radio rounds off this weeks reviews. What starts off as a pleasant tune morphs into something with a bit and edge. Break Us has a groove that is hard to deny. Top stuff from the band's upcoming album Freedom.
