Single Reviews 23/10/20

In a strong week for releases it is Northern Revelation who give us our final Single Of The Week for October with new single History. Hailing from Preston, there’s a very obvious northern indie lad vibe throughout and we love it. They don’t reinvent the wheel on this and the Shed 7 influence is clear to see which makes History all the more endearing. For a new band seemingly doing things on their own this is well produced. The guitar solo is blinding and vocalist Darrel has one of those voices you want to hear more of. Northern Revelation remind me of Northern Uproar; the whole vibe , sound and attitude is so similar, which is a huge compliment. Stream now.

We kick things off this week with Paws from Orchard, a Stoke based four piece who specialize in anthemic indie pop. Paws is full of dreamy guitars  and minor chords in what is a solid release...Geordie lads St Buryan have released Torn Apart, a feel good tune that is well produced. Certainly emotional, the second chorus crashes in like a hurricane and we are off from there with St Buryan showing their alt rock colours to full effect. A must listen...Skylights show their softer side on Darkness Falls, a sweeping acoustic lead tune that has a huge sound. The chorus is rip roaring and a sing a long for sure. Their best release so far...Amy Shark featuring Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker have put together C’MON, another cut from Amy’s upcoming new album. We are huge, huge fans of Amy Shark here at Our Sound but here it is paint by numbers which is a shame as C’MON does start out promising. In an ideal world this would have been a perfectly fine album track...The Fullers show their maturity on new release Through The Lens that has an orchestra and everything. It is an ambitious song with a 1950’s feel. Through The Lens stands out in a sea of indie guitar rock and The Fullers have to be applauded for trying something different here..White is a hard rock track from Burning Pools, a band lead by Ginger Pooley who is the former bassist with The Smashing Pumpkins and Gwen Stefani. White contains plenty of fuzz and sounds pretty great..The Elf Of Elbrook Court is back with his final release of 2020 and I Feel Fine is an ominous tune that is haunting...Back to the hard rock and Yard Of Blondes ask Do You Need More? on their new one. It chugs along in a way these songs do but is altogether nothing new or memorable...Notts band For The Girl know how to do the rock thing right on new release Fishnets And Dreams. It starts off loud with an ear catching riff before the vocals kick in leading to a proper rock n roll chorus. Solid tune...Dirty Knees is  a sun kissed indie from Medium Love, an East London outfit formed from the ashes of Big Deal. A twangy guitar riff underpins something that almost touches on glam rock in places without being obvious about it. Exciting...Reverend & The Makers guitarist Ed Cosens makes his solo debut on If (read our full article on this and view the video here), a song that showcases the songwriting ability of Ed. Sounding melodic and even a bit wild west in places it is a promising debut from Cosens who has an album up his sleeve for 2021...We loved the last release from Johnny Lloyd (Real Thing which was our Single Of The Week that week) but unfortunately new release Suze is nothing to write home about or maybe just not our cup of tea...and finally talented singer songwriter Charlotte Betson sounds very bright and chirpy on Everything I wish I Said. Unlike others in her field, this is really contemporary sounding pop that shows off her vocal talent.

All of the above new releases above can be found on the Our Sound Spotify Playlist here.
