Single Reviews 20/03/21

Published on 20 March 2021 at 11:19

Sometimes a band, and in particular a song, comes along and you know you are discovering something very special. Merseyside band More In Luv have done just that on their new single 'Someone Else'.

This is Indie pop in the vein of The 1975 back before they jumped the shark. There is a thread of summer here, a breezy lead guitar washes over delicious keys and an earnest vocal. 'Someone Else' is a glittering. as perfect an indie pop tune you'll hear and is our Single Of The Week. Stream here.

Tickets for our Indie All Dayer in Hull on 26/9 go on sale this Friday, the 26th of March. Tickets are expected to sell out fast for this all day gig, headlined by Britpop icons Northern Uproar. For the full line up and the ticket link please click here.

Onto the rest of this week's new releases and friend of the website Sam Lambeth returns with his new single 'When I'm With You', the third single release from his forthcoming album. Acoustic guitar and piano mesh perfectly on this tender track, with Lambeth's sincere vocal a particular highlight. The song is allowed to breathe and much like a bottle of Shiraz, is best enjoyed in those moments when you want to kick back and forget about the world...Southampton quartet The Dead Freights bring the 70's fuzz on 'Sufferin' Safari', a punchy track with dark almost comic lyrics such as "All my bad dreams make sense but my wet ones don't". The song is a mesh of styles and influences, creating a unique listen...'Nowhere Town' is the new single from Lauryn Macfarlane, a Canadian artist whose voice is something to behold. The song itself is a slow tempo affair with  angelic sounding synth and an almost marching band drum beat. The gospel influence is here but make no mistake, 'Nowhere Town' is a near perfect love-pop song...Indie-folk band Betweeen/Roads recently released 'Blue Eyes', a teasing, Stevie Nicks sounding tune that is more pure pop than anything else. The beat in the chorus will have you nodding away as lead singer Amie Grendon delivers a soft, sincere vocal...BUEL has delivered an unexpected cover of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Currently working on her debut LP, her rendition of the classic rock song is an unbelievable spin on things. Slowing the track down and delivered in such a tantalising way, turning it into an almost rnb pop song works brilliantly. It shouldn't but it does...Ahead of the release of their fourth album 'Godspeed', out on April the 2nd, GLASVEGAS have released SHAKE THE CAGE (FÜR THEO)', a song that is on the soundtrack to the new Alan McGee biopic Creation Stories. Playing over the end credits, the song is not dissimilar in intent to 'Choose Life' from Trainspotting. A dystopian sermon if you will, it fits the movie perfectly. An intense and engrossing listen...Birmingham indie-punksters LOVEBREAKERS are love struck on new single 'Laura', a vibrant anthem that was recorded in LA with Davey Warsop (Green Day, Foo FIghters). It doesn't get much better than this -a catchy 80's tinged feel good effort completed by a huge chorus...'Feels So Real' is the new one from It's Creation Baby band The Clockworks. This is the bands first release of 2021, following on from the magnificent 'Enough Is Never Enough' which impressed in the latter half of last year. 'Feels So Real' is a torrent of noise and energy; it is the sound of a band capturing urban life on record. The lyrics paint a picture of urban decay - broken gates and shopping trollies in rivers. The Clockworks are one of the UK's most important bands, as evidenced here yet again...The fun and flirtatious 'Can't Be Friends' is by London pop princess Flo Gallop, a song we wrote about earlier in the week.

Flo has a really powerful pop vocal here that is charming, especially when delivering lyrics this contemporary.  It is suburban London pop that is both colourful and alive...Paris Youth Foundation are back with new anthem 'Tomorrow'. Wearing their hearts on their sleeves. 'Tomorrow' is the perfect break-up anthem.  The chorus is the focus here, a wall to wall eruption of stadium yearning indie-rock...Chris Pidsley hit our radar a couple of months ago with his sublime single 'Listen To Your Mum' which was our Single Of The Week. The Tottenham based musician returns with 'Alex's House', a more guitar lead indie tune that comes complete with an infectious riff. His trademark storytelling remains on a song that has clear passion...'Grow' is a moving, authentic sounding  tune from Aberdeen four=piece Audiokicks. A mature song, on another week this would have been our Single Of The Week. Front man Iain Jamieson has such a sense of realness to his voice that propels 'Grow' to the next level. A must listen...Thrillhouse are a Brighton based duo whose new release 'Where The Roads Don't Go' was written about in-depth here. The single is cinematic in scope, with a brooding intro that recalls Jarvis Cocker at his spoken word best. The song is a true journey - a minute and a half in and we are off to the races, a blinding lead guitar that doesn't let up. A gem of a tune...'Sky' is the offering from Harlee Rosanna, a Notts based performer who has had support from BBC Introducing. 'Sky' is endearing in its apparent simplicity. The song has a 90's alternative Mazzy Starr type vibe and is altogether a decent listen...Alt-rockers Sinka have released 'Skies', a single taken from their upcoming EP. 'Skies' is immediately punchy before mellowing out for the melodic verse. The chorus is rip-roaringly loud and in your face, we love it...we finish off the week's reviews with 'Black & Blue', a heartfelt electronic ballad from Junkheart. The final part of a trilogy of songs, 'Black & Blue' is moving storytelling at its very best.
