We were first introduced to the artistic world of Realma when she released her interesting and intelligent debut work 'A Hint Of Pink' - which arrived along with a spoken word version. Now, the transformative and post-modern Realma has released her new track, called 'Wandering' - which explores the fine line between love and obsession.
'Wandering' begins with a mood-setting saxophone accompanied by the tinkling of a piano - before Realma's theatrical and soft vocal enters. The song is compelling in the sense that the arrangement is simply astounding; here is an artist who is not afraid to be intricate nor stray from what is deemed 'the norm' when it comes to crafting a song.
If we had to pinpoint a genre that 'Wandering' fits into it would be Jazz and more specifically the bygone era of film noir.
Realma: "Two years ago, I had this assessment at Pointblank Music School in London for songwriting. Busy with full-time film and drama studies, I just wanted to quickly compose a simple love song. Despite writing lyrics of standard sweet nothings, I found this borderline obsessive tone when I revisited the material. It’s as if the words described abusive relationships, a few of which I’d witnessed with those close to me. With that came the idea to venture into the highly dramatic genre of film noir, which I am a huge fan of, and give it all an orchestral treatment from my classical music background."
'Wandering' has a live performance video (released 11th of June) in which Realma has collaborated with a worldwide group of young artists and a 3D music video by the award-winning animator and 3D artist, Mihajlo Dragaš.
Mihaljo: "The starting idea was to implement the recognizable style of classic black and white noir films, with symbolical accents of color similar to graphic novels like ‘Sin City’. Use of dark city environments, atmospheric fog and rain adds even more to the story of passion, revenge and love, including a striking twist at the end. Together with the music, it all came to be a kind of a love letter to the film noir aesthetic."
Realma is a unique persona, as shown in her work so far. Artistic, driven and not conforming to the rules of traditional contemporary music, the world she is creating is fascinating. With two further releases to come later this year, her world is one we always enjoy paying a visit to.
'Wandering' is out now on all major streaming platforms.
