The Reytons give us our Single Of The Week with Red Smoke, a bloody monster of a tune that kicks off thirty second in “here we here we fucking go” - if you’re not familiar with the Sheffield band think early Arctic Monkeys - the banging sound and social observations of a band in the know. Red Smoke is one of The Reytons strongest single releases to date and quite frankly are the best band around at the moment. Their music and attitude is relevant and exciting. When we grow up they are who we want to be. I could go on, just listen now.
We open this week with Emily Breeze and Confessions Of An Ageing Party Girl, a beguiling tune in the vein of Pulp’s kitchen sink view on life and this has a disco feel and a stomping chorus..Punk rockers CAT SFX release a lyrically contemporary blast of noise with Reunite, a blend of melodic punk and ear splitting rock on roll on the busy Creation 23 label, decent...Brummie lads The VCR continue to impress on Close To Free. The melody is definitely there and the 60’s beat with Gallagher-esque nasal vocals turns into something almost pop punk in the chorus. A band that can write a tune...Stand Your Ground is by Sun Cutter (Kevin Pearce), a moving and sweeping ballad that has some pretty astonishing production...Southampton indie rockers The Dead Freights get us grooving on Stray Dogs, a punchy tune from a band described as the ‘disco-Nirvana’...Vela Incident are a band making waves and rightfully so if new release Home is anything to go by. Home has an open chord picking guitar riff and the song really takes off after the two minute mark when the crescendo peaks. A fine song...Game Over is by Irish alternative pop singer Rebekah Fitch, pop with depth and a smattering of attitude...LA band Jimkata give us an Indie by numbers template of a song in Weight of Paradise. That’s not to say it isn’t an enjoyable listen all the same. With marching drums and a thundering bass hurtling towards a chant a long chorus there is nothing to dislike here...Hell, Save My Soul rocks like a raw something or other on steroids. It’s the new one from Liverpool’s The Mono LPs and it sounds HUGE. Big chunky chords and blues rock n roll. Hell, Save My Soul would easily be our Single Of The Week on pretty much any other week...Continuing with decent rock tunes, Kryis (a band who work hard on social media in a way a lot of other bands should take note of) have put out Things You Wouldn’t Do, northern lad vocals wrapped in an almost US pop punk riffs..Written amongst the chaos of the pandemic, All The Waves is by Valencia James, a truly international artist with the track being mixed in Sydney and mastered in Paris. All The Waves is bland with a lot of style and little substance...King Mala show the rest of the genre how it should be done on Homebody, a song for the young uns with hand claps and a blissful to the ear piano...Radegunds have release a two track mini EP consisting of Regular Thing and She Don’t Know. The Arctic Monkeys inspiration is definitely there on the former (in a positive way) while second track She Dont Know is more of a dark stomper. Well worth checking out,,,Ed Nash (Bombay Bicycle Club) slows down the tempo on When which is a lovely soothing acoustic ballad...East Yorkshire lads Priestgate (so local to us) give us a perfect slice of indie pop on Summ(air) - a summer song for sure in how bright and breezy it is. Really good stuff..Are You For Real? by Model Society is familiar rock that tries a bit too hard even if the overall sound is decent...
