MITCHELL YOUNG Opens Up About His Single 'Delicate Flower' In Our Interview - From Beyonce's Father To Busking In London - It Has Been A Journey

MItchell Young is a talented songwriter and performer, hailing from Uxbridge, UK.  "Delicate Flower" stands out not only for its heartfelt lyrics but also for its early success, securing Mitchell his first BBC introducing radio play on Sussex and Surrey. We recently had the opportunity to have a chat with Mitchell.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself as an artist and how your journey has led to this
point?

Yeah man. So the journey has been wild to say the least. I started my music endeavour
when lockdown hit. I was sitting there pretty tipsy one day miserable like the rest of the
world and said to myself I am going to become a singer songwriter. From then in that
moment, I knew that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. For the next Few
years, I was under my made-up persona called “Yvngerror” as my surname is actually
Young and falling into music at this point in my life was a bit of a “Error” through that
phase I travelled to and from LA, busking the streets of London and the beach of Santa
Monica and relentlessly took any opportunity thrown my way. I released a tonne of
music and music videos but nothing quite hit. It went from being a drunk idea to
becoming reality, from busking the streets to hitting many headlines shows across
London and even making it to the finals in multiple competitions such as “Future Icon”.

Over the past few years working under the name “Yvngerror” it taught me a lot; I made a
lot of mistakes and had not quite figured out who I really was as an artist. I guess that
was to do with everything happening so fast. I then went to LCCM to do a masters in
performance of music, even had a one on one with Matthew Knowles (Beyonce's dad)
But after signing a record deal towards the end of 2024 things took a turn, when 2025 hit
I no longer recognised who I was, the record label destroyed me. They offered me a load
of fake dreams, put me on a shelf and wanted to take pretty much everything I had
worked for.

Luckily, I had got myself a fantastic lawyer and managed to get myself out of
the red flag situation busking my way to freedom again. It was then I decided to take a
complete U-turn and just be myself with no strings attached so I rebranded completely
towards the end of 2025 under my real name Mitchell Young. Most recently finished up
my project ‘Divine Happiness” and have now been starting to slowly introduce it to the
world. This project is one to leave a mark in the strange new world music industry, I got
to work with some incredible people on it including James Guercio (Drummer) he is the
son of Joe Guercio who was the conductor for Elvis Presley (That’s a whole other
interview to talk about).

What does the title "Delicate Flower" represent to you personally, and why did you
choose it for this single?

I chose the title name “Delicate flower” as the whole song itself and the making process
was like that of a ‘Delicate flower”. It also had a unique sense of difference to it which I
think makes it stand out a little from the gazillions of songs released into the world
daily.

The track is a tender piece blending warm nostalgia with sincere emotion. What
inspired the song— was it a specific moment, relationship, memory, or something else?

My song writing processed always come at the most bizarre times and for this one I was
out in the garden watering my flowers when I took a moment to just stare at the flower
noticing I knocked a petal of it. In that moment my brain spiralled and it kind of just
reminded me how delicate life is alongside Love, And when you have someone or
something so close to your heart that makes you feel warm and fulfilled inside you
should do everything to protect and nurture it. Even in times when you don’t think that
you are worthy of this Love, Protect it. I think in this modern-day people are to consume
by all these other things that they forget what truly matters most and get swayed into
making the wrong decisions. If we all took some time to breathe and look at the positive
things around us, you would realise life itself has many fantastic attributes to it if you
don’t let the negative energy around you in.

Your music sits in the alt-folk, indie folk, and acoustic realm. How does "Delicate
Flower" fit into or push the boundaries of those genres for you?

I think it just gets to the point straight away, there is no over the top production or lyrics
no one can understand in there. I like the songs I write to have a purpose and connect
with the listener; I also like to be able to allow the listener to understand the context of
the song of which a lot of these days' songs are just provocative and trash talk.

Does the song draw from personal experiences, or is it more observational/storydriven? What emotion were you hoping to capture?

It’s a mixture of both from my perspective of my surroundings and life and in the
perspective for others to be able to connect to it. So, although it is directly coming from
my personal life, I wanted to ensure to adapt the idea for everybody to connect with. For
example, the lyric “Tell me again that you love me”. We all have days where we just
want to hear those powerful words as it can sometimes make your day go from being
shit to amazing in a split second. Emotionally I want it to show how Love can heal a
person from a place where they thought they were stuck, by simply accepting the Love
and accepting yourself even if your mind tells you, that you are not worthy. Mental
health is on the rise and people's anxious thoughts can become self-destructive. The
emotions of the song are also to heal the listener and give them hope “I know that you
want to help me cos I'm hurt, but you can’t do that cos your to god dam delicate” which
means you too good for me and I don’t want to bring you down with my misery.

You recorded "Delicate Flower" at Audiohaus in London. What was that studio session
like, and how did the environment shape the final sound?

It was an absolute blast; my best friend Ivan Gallegos flew over from LA and funded as
the studio session (as part of the HELP creative) with Jay Jacobs to make this possible
(So grateful for this). We were locked in the studio for 4 days straight doing a song a day
to complete the last songs for the debut album “Divine Happiness’. We kick started the
4 days with “Delicate flower” which was just an amazing process. Having your best
mate there supporting your dream and working with the talented Jay Jacobs really
brought the song into a new life.

Walk us through the songwriting process for this track. Did the melody or lyrics come
first? How long did it take to develop?

For me it’s always the same process when the idea pops into my head I run to my guitar
throw a load of paper on the floor with a pen and turn the transistor on. Then the two
work together I usually just mess around with some ideas on the guitar and verbally
spout the first things that come to my head. It usually takes a matter of minutes before
the basic idea of the song is complete and then I just fine tune the song. After that it is
just a matter of practicing it out on the streets or at home before waiting for the studio
time to pop up.

"Delicate Flower" has been getting airplay on BBC Introducing. How does that kind of
independent artist exposure feel at this stage of your career?

Man, it is a sigh of relief to finally be heard it has taken me nearly 4 years. Under my old
name Yvngerror I must have submitted over 15 singles to BBC introducing all of which
were just washed under the table. But to be honest that kept me pushing forward to
figure out what wasn’t working. But yeh when I received the email that ‘Delicate flower’
was going to be played my heart dropped and I smiled so hard. I was in the gym at the
time people must have thought I was nuts. It was amazing to hear the words spoken
about my artistry live on BBC and the support coming in from fans. Next stop who
knows maybe I might get to the Introducing stage at Glastonbury next year watch this
space!

This single is part of a series leading into your upcoming debut album "Divine
Happiness". How does "Delicate Flower" connect to the broader themes of the album?

So, the complete Debut album “Divine Happiness” is all about the idea of healing
through pain and finally finding “Divine Happiness”. ‘Delicate flower’ connects to the
broader theme of the album by slowly giving you a sneak peek into what is coming next.
It also shows that through the dark times there is light at the end of the tunnel you just
must want it. Keep pushing forward and remember that everyday things can and will get
better if you want them to.

What do you hope listeners take away from "Delicate Flower", especially those
discovering your music for the first time?

Never give up on love, be kind to the ones around you. Stay cautious to the ones that
disrupt your energy. Look at the world around you more. Take a walk from time to time.

Are there any particular artists or influences (folk, country, or otherwise) that shaped
this song or your sound in general?

To be honest I think my sound is unique but if I had to pick my influences would be
Dermot Kennedy, Ben Howard, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen purely for
their songwriting capabilities and their own individual sound.

What’s next after "Delicate Flower"—more singles, the full album, live shows, or
something else on the horizon?

Global domination hahah, yeh man more singles will be flooding out over the next
couple of months one has just dropped as we speak called “1984” based on the book
by George Orwell about how what he predicted in 1949 is pretty much coming to life
now and how the world is pretty F*cked up right now. Shot the music video for that the
other day with Back the Brave media, so that is in the editing loop right now. Then
summertime is looking to be a busy period with the Debut album looking to come out
maybe end of July. I have a couple of shows awaiting the final confirmation 26th July
Essex recovery Festival which will be amazing, then 30th July 02 Academy Islington.
Apart from that just struggling like the rest of us artists in this technology consumed
world of AI and Bullsh*t.
