The Los Angeles-based duo Social Gravy have never been ones for polish, and their latest single “Get Away,” the second preview from the forthcoming The Pebble EP, proves it with absolute conviction. Clocking in at just over three-minutes, the track is a riff-heavy declaration that finds Brad Kohn and Vee Bordukov leaning hard into the live-wire tension that has defined their best work. From the opening distorted guitars — equal parts early-2000s garage revival and ’90s alt-rock - to the propulsive rhythm section that is so vibrant, “Get Away” feels less like a studio product and more like a document of two people locked in a room, hammering out something authentic.
What immediately stands out is the song’s dynamic control. Social Gravy balance low, mid, and high-end frequencies with impressive clarity, letting the guitars snarl without mud, while the drums hit with that satisfying crack of a well-mic’d kit. Kohn’s vocals carry a weathered sincerity—part plea, part snarl—that sells the central theme of escape, not as escapist fantasy but as a necessary, almost desperate retreat back toward something authentic. Lines like the recurring hook land with anthemic weight yet never tip into overproduced stadium cliché. There’s grit here, but it’s purposeful grit.
Production-wise, the decision to track live in the studio pays dividends. You can hear the room, the slight bleed between instruments, the natural push-pull of a band playing together rather than overdubbing perfection. It gives “Get Away” a raw velocity that feels increasingly rare in 2026’s hyper-compressed indie landscape. The bridge momentarily pulls back into a taut, almost spoken-word tension before exploding back into the main riff, a move that rewards repeat listens and hints at the emotional range the full EP might explore.
Lyrically, the song walks a tightrope between personal catharsis and universal relatability. It’s about breaking patterns, about the courage (or recklessness) required to step away from comfort and toward whatever version of yourself still feels real. In a year when so much guitar music either retreats into nostalgia or chases algorithmic trends, Social Gravy sound refreshingly unconcerned with either. They’re carving their own lane—melodic enough to stick in your head, jagged enough to draw blood.
“Get Away” isn’t revolutionary, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s confident, focused, and relentlessly energetic indie rock that reminds you why you fell in love with the format in the first place. If The Pebble continues in this vein, Social Gravy might just carve out their biggest year yet. Crank it loud. This one deserves the volume.
