The Cases Deliver a Sparkling Debut with 'Mr Penny' EP

In a crowded field of young British guitar bands, Preston's The Cases stand out with genuine swagger and heart on their debut EP Mr Penny, released yesterday via This Feeling Records and LAB Records. Produced by Chris Taylor (Blossoms, Courteeners) at Liverpool's Kempston Street Studios, the four-tracker tells a cohesive, relatable story of youthful romance—from the dizzying highs of new love to the gut-punch of heartbreak and tentative renewal. It's a confident introduction that waves the flag for sharp, melodic indie rock with plenty of attitude.

The EP opens with the title track 'Mr Penny', an irresistible, high-energy earworm packed with glorious guitar riffs, breezy hooks, and frontman Harry Hornsby's charismatic vocals. It's pure summer barbecue fue — crisp chords, infectious rhythms, and that Libertines-esque raw charm that makes it an instant crowd-pleaser. Things shift gears on "The Curse," which starts with a dreamy, bluesy guitar intro before building tension and exploding into full indie propulsion, driven by Matt Barron's dynamic drumming. Harry takes centre stage here, weaving tales of romantic uncertainty with vulnerability and bite.

The emotional core hits hardest on 'She Said,' a gritty breakup anthem that layers heavier instrumentation over raw heartache. A standout drum fill near the end delivers cathartic release, like the final flare of a dying firework — perfectly mirroring the lyrics' turmoil. Closer "Romantic" lifts the spirits again, recapturing the opening track's airy energy and leaving listeners energized rather than drained. The narrative arc feels intentional and mature, a rare quality for a debut EP project.

The Cases — Hornsby on vocals/rhythm guitar, Will Bullen on lead, James Maher on bass, and Barron on drums — blend influences from The Beatles and Small Faces to modern Northwest acts like The K’s. The result is youthful yet polished, melodic yet swaggering. While some might crave a touch more unrefined edge amid the precision production, there's no denying the songcraft and live-honed tightness here.

Fans won't have to wait long to hear these tracks in the flesh. The band is hitting the road with upcoming shows including MUNRO Festival at Ku Bar in Stockton-on-Tees on June 6 and 110 Above at Gopsall Hall Farm in Atherstone across August 20-22. These dates promise to be raucous celebrations of their rising status — expect packed rooms and singalongs. The band also have a headline sow in Manchester towards the end of the year.

Mr Penny proves the hype is real. The Cases aren't just another indie buzz band; they're storytellers with tunes that stick. If this is the start, their future looks bright. Catch them live while you can — these lads are going places.
