The Crooks Unleash "Madness" – A Chaotic Anthem That Demands to Be Felt

In the ever-evolving landscape of British indie rock, few bands capture the raw, unfiltered pulse of Northern grit quite like The Crooks. The five-piece outfit hailing from Chesterfield, UK, returns with their latest single "Madness," a visceral track that dives headfirst into chaos, obsession, and the fragile line between chasing dreams and watching them unravel. Fronted by the impassioned Jack Knight on vocals, alongside Duncan Couch on rhythm guitar, Christian Stones on lead guitar, Conor Fletcher on drums, and Aiden Morris on bass, the band delivers a sound that’s equal parts unhinged energy and meticulous craftsmanship.

From the opening bars, "Madness" grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go. Knight’s urgent, soaring delivery channels a sense of frantic introspection, wrestling with themes of silence that screams louder than words, all-consuming obsession, and the haunting weight of aspirations slipping through desperate fingers. The guitars snarl and soar with a Britpop-infused edge—think swirling riffs that nod to classic influences while carving out something fiercely contemporary—while the rhythm section pounds like an unrelenting heartbeat, Fletcher’s drumming driving the track forward with propulsive force and Morris’s bass anchoring the frenzy in deep, resonant grooves. It’s the kind of song that feels alive, restless, and impossible to sit still through, perfectly suited for sweaty club nights or late-night drives where the volume drowns out doubt.

Production-wise, Chris Marshall’s mixing sharpens every jagged edge without losing the band’s inherent grit, creating a wall of sound that’s loud, layered, and dynamically explosive. Natalie Bibby’s mastering adds a wide, punchy polish that translates flawlessly across formats—whether blasting through festival speakers or intimate headphones, the track retains its visceral punch. At just under three minutes of tightly wound intensity, "Madness" wastes no time building to its cathartic peaks, where Knight’s vocals crest into a chorus that feels like a collective exhale of shared turmoil: running headlong into the unknown while questioning every step.

When Our Sound Music first launched six years ago and we were thrust into the then-thriving world of UK independent music, one band stood out head and shoulders above their contemporaries with a killer vocal, incredible production and above all, accessible songs. Since then, The Crooks have taken a strange and frustrating trajectory. A prolific period between 2019 and 2021 saw the band release a swarm of killer singles. Then came a period of almost three years of silence before releasing four further tracks in 2024. We had the single 'Carry On' last year but it seems that, for whatever reasons, the band's overall stalled output has had a negative effect on their potential. As a fan, we hope that this return with 'Madness' heralds a period of heightened productivity for The Crooks.

This release solidifies The Crooks as one of the UK’s most electrifying live-wire acts emerging from the North. Their trajectory—from packed local shows to supporting bigger names and festival slots—speaks to a band with genuine momentum. "Madness" isn’t just another single; it’s a statement about the beautiful insanity of pursuit, offering no tidy resolutions but plenty of anthemic hooks to scream along to. In a scene often polished to perfection, The Crooks remind us why we fell in love with rock ‘n’ roll in the first place: its ability to mirror our inner storms and make them danceable. Stream "Madness" now on all platforms and crank it loud. If this is the standard for their next chapter, the future looks gloriously unhinged.
