Matt Law's "Made Up Construct": Philosophical Indie Rock with Basement Gig Swagger

In an age where singles often play it safe, Matt Law strides in with “Made Up Construct” and immediately stakes a claim as one to watch. The Glasgow-based artist delivered a punchy, thoughtful indie-rock track that wears its influences proudly while carving out something fresh and self-aware. Clocking in at a brisk runtime, the song wastes no time hooking the listener with driving rhythms and a chorus built for live sing-alongs in sweaty venues.

Musically, Law and his band—drummer Taylor Whyte, bassist Alex Duncan (or Alex Duncan-Gibson), rhythm guitarist Kian Carrol, and lead guitarist Morgan Flannigan—channel a potent mix of touchstones. You can hear the loose, swaggering guitar lines of The Strokes in Carrol’s work, the punk-pop propulsion of Green Day in Whyte’s urgent beats, and a subtle undercurrent of Radiohead’s melancholic unease weaving through the arrangement. It’s an unlikely but effective marriage: unpretentious thump meets art-rock introspection.

The production, captured during the group’s first full-band session at Riverside Music College, retains a raw, in-the-room energy—polished enough to shine on playlists but live enough to feel authentic. Basslines ground the track warmly, rhythm guitar adds harmonic bite, and lead lines soar through melodic peaks without ever overwhelming the core songcraft.

The real strength, however, lies in the lyrics. “Made Up Construct” dives into the human habit of searching for meaning and connection in everything, our reflexive tendency to make the world revolve around personal narratives. It’s heady territory for a debut—philosophical without pretension, wryly acknowledging that the very act of writing a song about constructs is itself a construct. There’s a Talking Heads-like self-awareness here, delivered with catchy, memorable phrasing that lets you either ponder deeply or simply shout along. The result is relatable existentialism: thought-provoking yet accessible, the kind of track that lingers after the last chord fades.

“Made Up Construct” shows impressive confidence and chemistry from a band clearly honed by live gigs. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it spins it with real verve. Matt Law has announced himself not as a finished product but as an exciting prospect—one whose next steps could very well elevate him beyond the Scottish scene. If this single is the blueprint, we’re in for a compelling ride. Highly recommended for fans of hook-driven alternative rock with brains and heart.
