The Belgian independent artist Sunny C has long operated in the shadowy corners of EBM and dark electro, and with the newly rebuilt “Star Ruler”, the project steps firmly into sharper focus.
Originally appearing on the 2020 album Alvida Odia, this substantially reworked version strips away excess while amplifying everything that made the track compelling in the first place. The song opens with playful, almost mischievous synth lines that prance over a whirring atmospheric bed. What begins as relatively light quickly gains weight as panting percussion enters and steadily tightens its grip. A rolling, sequenced EBM bassline soon locks in, creating that classic tension between hypnotic pulse and physical drive. Sunny C understands the architecture of a good electronic track: the build is patient but never aimless.
Vocals arrive with commanding presence, delivering the title phrase and later lines such as “All I shoot is cattle, guts and flesh and battle, come on taste my metal” with a brisk, almost sneering charm. The delivery sits perfectly against the thickening production with spacey synth pulses and heavier low-end tones that push the track toward a climactic intensity without losing its coldwave chill. Violin elements add an unexpected textural edge, preventing the arrangement from feeling purely functional club fare.
At a length that exceeds standard dancefloor constraints, “Star Ruler” refuses to rush its own escalation. The dry mix approach serves it well: rhythmic impact is clearer, the vocals sit more prominently, and the overall production feels tighter and more deliberate than the original. The result is a track that balances nostalgic synth romance with contemporary dark-club force.
Sunny C demonstrates a clear instinct for structural momentum and tonal navigation. “Star Ruler” is not merely a rehash, it is a refined statement of intent from an artist who knows exactly how to make electronic darkness both danceable and slightly menacing. For fans of EBM, coldwave and dark electro, this is essential listening.
