Released on September the 11th, "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?" is the latest single from the powerhouse duo, Last Crash. This is another captivating release, penned by Darren Clarke who is joined by Lorna Keene, following hot on the heels of their triumphant previous debut single release 'An Ocean Divides' (reviewed here).
"Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone'? opens with a tender and moving chord progression that is akin to Lewis Capaldi. It has that same instant tug of the emotions, quickly introducing a captivating and poignant melody. Atmospheric keyboards and a gently picked open-chord guitar make way for Clarke's vocal. Reader, I don't think you are prepared for what you'll hear.
The vocal is the most hauntingly, devastatingly, emotionally charged piece of recorded work you'll ever likely hear. Never mind the lyrics, which we'll get to in the moment, this is a voice of sincerity and true authenticity; a songwriter singing words that are clearly personal. This sincerity resonates with the listener. It is not something that can be faked,
Lyrically, the song explores modern digital technology, the yearning for a true human connection. We are urged to put down our devices and live in the real world. Make a human connection. Let me be clear, this isn't a protest song. It's an emotionally charged plea. The chorus is heartbreaking. "Will you miss me when I'm gone?..when i'm gone..when I'm gone.." which when written here sound simplistic enough. Wait until you hear them sang. 'Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone' is in the same realm as 'Chasing Cars' or 'Somebody You Loved', an absolutely timeless track that, if we can distract ourselves from modern living for long enough, we will appreciate for years to come.
The production here is atmospheric, with each layer given room to breathe, culminating in a heart wrenching result. Last Crash are earning a reputation as fantastic songwriters and this latest single puts a cherry on the top. Producer Mike Cotterill has helped shape their atmospheric direction, and the partnership is coming to fruition here. Last Crash are influenced by bands such as The Cure, Interpol and The National, however it is only a matter of time before newer bands are saying that they are influenced by Last Crash.
"Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone" is simply an incredible listen. Our fingers are crossed that future releases hold up to the same high standard the duo have set themselves with this release. Essential.
