Retro Review: Black Grape It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah

Recorded at the famous Rockfield studios in Wales as well as studios in Lincolnshire and London, It’s Great When You’re Straight...Yeah was the 1995 debut album from the former Happy Mondays man Shaun Ryder. It reached number one in the UK album chart and remained in the top spot for two weeks after being released on the 7th of August of ‘95.

The album upon release was a surprise in that it is full of memorable songs that are fun, catchy and full of life. Ryders wit shines throughout. The lead single Reverend Black Grape is as good of an opening track on an album you will find with second single In The Name Of The Father following afterwards giving the listener a double dose of intent. Tramazii Partii is my favourite song from the album. A timeless tune about, well, drug use. Such a catchy chorus and a humour that sums up the band entirely. Kelly’s Heroes is yet another tremendous song. 1995 was a great year for albums and this is the reason why IGWYSY is so incredible; the opening four tracks are timeless indie classics.

The rest of the album does steer into average territory however without being sub par with Shake Well Before Opening the pick of the rest.

The album went platinum in 1996 less than a year after its release.

A timeless album worth listening to regularly even if just for the first half. Those first four songs make this a solid album. ****.
