Hazel Mei has today released her wonderful new single, 'The Funniest Thing'. The Brisbane, Australia native released her debut EP 'Lost & Found' last year and she impresses further on this new track.
Written during a local lockdown period, 'The Funniest Thing' was produced and mixed at home by Hazel Mei herself. Immediately endearing, the sound here is laid back and smooth. The single is light and airy; the arrangement impressive with a welcome use of saxophone.
About the formation and recording of the song, Hazel says: "It just felt like the right thing to do. We could have made long term plans and hired a studio later in the year, but I felt the song needed to be realised there and then. With that came the freedom to record anytime, produce it myself and allow ourselves to get swept up in the idea when it was fresh!"
Lyrically, 'The Funniest Thing' is about over politeness in conversations and lack of assertiveness from the writers point of view. In the lyrics, Hazel Mei makes light of her moments of timidness, something that is relatable.
The track is uplifting and wistful; a perfect, easy listen that is a welcome addition to Hazel Mei's growing catalogue.
'The Funniest Thing' is out now on all major streaming platforms and you can listen to the song below via our embedded link.
