Moon Cub is the new indie electronica/trip hop collaboration between husband and wife duo Rob & Suzy Muir. This debut single, ‘Utopia 90’, was released earlier this month and is the first single to be lifted from their upcoming album ‘Skyline Waiting Room’ which is slated for release in Summer 2025.

'Utopia 90' is a welcome journey back to the heyday of the trip hop sound, with a contemporary spin for good measure. Chilled, full of vibes (as they say these days) and full of nostalgia, it is a welcome introduction to newcomers Moon Cub.. The music was written by the male half of the combination, Rob, as well as the production side of things. The lyrics were written by Suzy and she lends her lead vocal to the track too. A perfect, creative tandem if ever there was one.

About 'Utopia 90', Moon Cub say: "the song is about floating away in thought while travelling long distances, gazing wistfully out of the window and the incoming waves of nostalgia that this can induce.." Born as a side project from Rob's solo project Luna Waves, this allows him to be more experimental and to explore a different avenue, musically. There are some great influences here; Portishead (naturally), Radiohead and Morcheeba are amongst the list but ultimately, Moon Cub have created their own, unique addition to the genre.

'Utopia 90,' can be summed up in one word: mesmerising.  Its blend of downtempo indie pop and nostalgic ‘90s soul is a breath of fresh air. The Nottingham-based duo crafts a lush, psychedelic-tinged soundscape with glassy melodies and jazzy undertones, evoking a dreamy, sun-soaked vibe. The track’s subtle R&B and blues influences weave through its atmospheric production, creating a vivid, almost cinematic experience. Lyrically, it explores a yearning for an idealised past, delivered with a soft, mystical charm that lingers.

The song’s understated elegance is its strength. Moon Cub’s innovative approach shines, making 'Utopia 90' a promising introduction to their artistry. Perfect for fans of alt-pop with a retro soul twist, it’s a track that invites repeated listens to unravel its layers.
