Minneapolis’ The Violet Nines are back with a brand new single, ‘Can We Go’ alongside a new line-up with vocalist Hayley Lewis and Delon Smith. The multi-fronted band fuse pop, rock, funk and R&B to create a unique sound, reminiscent of Tame Impala’s electronic funk. Along with the new members, the V9s consists of: Ben Cline (sax/keys), Nick Eagon (guitar/vocals), O’SAY (keys/vocals) and Jon (drums).

Can We Go’, according to the band is, “about finding someone equally wicked to walk the world with.” It’s a very laidback and upbeat track with a sense of dreaminess yet intrigue as to where the song will go. The music creates a calming soundscape on the verses but that ‘groove-pop’ kicks in on the chorus, building the song up slowly. Hayley’s vocals are soft yet confident and blend effortlessly with the harmonies introduced at the end of the first verse.

The music video accompanying the track has a surreal retro/80s feel to it as the band sends a VHS to a secret agent duo, letting them know that they know and to ‘catch us if you can’. We also get a bonus saxophone solo on the bridge, a treat only the music video gives us – but a component I feel the song was missing on the first listen, the only complaint I have is I wish it was longer.

The Violet Nines are set to have quite the year, releasing new music after a small hiatus in 2020. We’re excited to keep up with them.

‘Can we Go’ is available to stream on all major platforms now.
