The Manchester-based four-piece Elephant And The Rider recently released their debut EP - a triumphant culmination of the band's efforts to date. Forever Didn’t Last That Long features six songs (the perfect length for an EP) that blends indie rock, folk, and subtle psychedelic influences.. Elephant and the Rider have the knack for crafting introspective, atmospheric songs that linger long after the final note - lets take a closer look at the EP.
The music speaks for itself, delivering a raw and heartfelt experience that feels both timeless and fresh. The EP opens with 'Lost In Love,” a track that sets the tone with its immediate vocal delivery. It is crisp and hooks the listener immediately. The lyrics, steeped in themes of fleeting moments and lost connections, are delivered with a sincerity that avoids melodrama. The chorus is catchy and no doubt goes down well in a live setting too.
It’s an introduction that draws you in without overwhelming. 'Find The Flow,'the standout track, is next and assures the listener that vocalist Pip is a bonafide. A confident and tuneful delivery, quite frankly his voice is what makes these songs stand out amongst the band's contemporaries. This second track showcases the band’s ability to balance restraint and release. It’s the kind of track that begs for repeat listens, each spin revealing new layers.
'Pink Front Door' is a laid back affair. There’s a sense of longing here, underscored by minimalist production that lets the song breathe. Its quiet beauty grows with each listen, rewarding patient listeners with its subtle emotional weight. 'Tango' injects a bit of summer grit into the EP, with vibes galore and a slightly more upbeat tempo. The key change into the bridge is something to behold and makes way for a toe=tapping, bright chorus.

'Kept On a Keyring' a slow-burning ballad that ties the themes of impermanence and reflection together. The arrangement and steady groove helps to create a moving atmosphere. Finally, we have the EP closer, 'Keep Knocking'. A musical introduction delivers more of this innovative band's unique sound. Lead vocalist Pip's range is made of good use here, lifting the song into anthem territory.
Forever Didn’t Last That Long is a concise statement from a band with a clear vision. Elephant and the Rider excel at creating evocative, emotionally rich songs without over complicating their arrangements.
As a whole, Elephant and the Rider's debut EP is a fine collection of tracks with the standouts being the opener 'Lost In Love' and the enlightening 'Pink Front Door'. There is plenty here for you to get your teeth into. We'll be listening to this EP throughout the summer and you should too.
